BEIRUT, July 13 (Xinhua) -- A number of gunmen opened fire early Monday at an army patrol and military centers in several areas in Lebanon's Bekaa region, resulting in the death of a soldier, according to a statement released by the army.

The army statement did not reveal the whereabouts of the gunmen after the shooting.

A day earlier, Abbas al-Masry, a wanted Lebanese citizen, opened fire in the air when he was trying to cross a checkpoint in Baalbek city by force, prompting the soldiers at the checkpoint to shoot him and his companion.

Both were injured and transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.
