BEIRUT, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Italian government donated on Wednesday 726,000 euros (856,000 U.S. dollars) to the Lebanese Red Cross, Elnashra news website reported.
The donation, which took place through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), aims at supporting the Lebanese Red Cross which is responsible of transferring COVID-19 cases to hospitals while providing emergency services after Beirut's blasts.
The donation also helps in mobilizing ambulances and the necessary teams due to the large number of injured people following the explosions.
"It also contributes to the rehabilitation of the blood transfusion centers affected in response to the increasing demand for blood," it said.
Two huge explosions rocked Port of Beirut on Aug. 4, shaking buildings all over Lebanon's capital, while killing 171 people and wounding 6,000 at least.
This has posed great challenges to the health sector which has already been facing pressure due to COVID-19 outbreak amid the worst economic crisis prevailing in Lebanon.
