BEIRUT -- Lebanese President Michel Aoun said on Wednesday that losses from the port explosions on Aug. 4 exceed 15 billion U.S. dollars, LBCI local TV channel reported.

"Primary information states that losses exceed 15 billion dollars in addition to the port's damage and the need for reconstruction material to rebuild the infrastructure that was destroyed by the explosions," Aoun said in a phone call with King of Spain Felipe VI.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden attended Wednesday a campaign event in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, together with Kamala Harris, his choice of Democratic vice presidential candidate, in what was the duo's first public appearance as running mates.

Biden in his remarks pledged that a "Joe Biden and Kamala Harris administration will have a comprehensive plan to meet the challenge of COVID-19 and turn the corner on this pandemic," adding that they will adhere to "masking, clear science-based guidance," meanwhile "dramatically scaling up testing, getting states and local governments the resources they need to open the schools and businesses safely."

GENEVA -- China is expected to play the role of a "locomotive" for powering global recovery in the post-pandemic era, a Swiss economist has said.

"The Chinese market has become an important growth driver because of its size and its continuing expansion," Rudolf Minsch, chief economist at Swiss national business federation Economiesuisse, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

PRAGUE -- Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said on Wednesday that the Czech Republic is a sovereign country, and he does not see any major threat here.

He made the remarks after visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed at a joint press briefing here that the United States, a country with a poor track record of respecting other nations' sovereignty, stood "prepared to support" the Czech people if the latter were bullied by others.

Calling the Czech Republic "a leader in Europe" on 5G and cybersecurity, Babis said that his country is "a sovereign country and I do not see any major threat here."

QUITO -- China's willingness to keep the door open to dialogue with the United States to address differences and mitigate tensions between the two powers should be lauded, Ecuador's former Foreign Minister Francisco Carrion has said.

"I applaud the Chinese position of being open to dialogue and finding a way out of the differences between the two countries," Carrion told Xinhua recently.

"China is a sufficiently skilled country, and above all patient, and knows how to handle things with great prudence and composure," he added.
