BEIRUT, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese army raided on Saturday an armed group in Wadi Khaled, northern Lebanon, leading to severe clashes between the army and members of the armed group near the Syrian border, the National News Agency reported.

A security source told Xinhua that the armed group members opened fire towards the Lebanese army and attacked them by throwing grenades.

Meanwhile, al-Mayadeen local TV channel reported that two members of the armed group blew themselves to avoid being arrested by the Lebanese army.

Most of the group's members are Syrian nationals, the report said.

Local residents in the area said they saw clouds of smoke rising from the mountainous area.

Hassan Khaled, a resident of Wadi Khaled, told Xinhua that the people clearly heard sounds of bullets and bombs.

The National News Agency reported that clashes are still ongoing while the number of deaths and injuries have not been identified yet.
