BEIRUT, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon on Sunday added 57 new villages to the lockdown list amid an increase in daily new cases of COVID-19, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The move comes as the total number of coronavirus cases in Lebanon increased by 1,002 to 62,286 on Sunday, NNA said.

The country also registered three more fatalities from the virus, raising the death toll to 520.

Meanwhile, caretaker Health Minister Hamad Hassan announced that Lebanon will get the vaccine against COVID-19 through COVAX, an international initiative aimed at ensuring equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines, before the end of this year.

"The first quantity of vaccine will be available for 20 percent of the Lebanese," he said, adding the rest of the needed quantities will arrive in Lebanon in batches.

Lebanon has been fighting against COVID-19 since Feb. 21.

On Sept. 9, China offered around 10,000 N95 masks, 100,000 medical masks, 100,000 gloves and 6,000 PCR rapid testing kits to help Lebanon fight the pandemic.
