BEIRUT, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese Army Directorate of Intelligence arrested a number of people who formed a cell supporting the Islamic State (IS) in the northern city of Tripoli, a statement by the Lebanese army reported on Tuesday.
The statement said that members of the cell purchased weapons and ammunition in order to carry out terror operations, taking advantage of the deteriorating situation in Lebanon.
It added that the cell members also sought to recruit more to join them.
The cell started its activities last June, and participated in the assassination of the former member of the Lebanese army's intelligence Ahmed Murad on Aug. 22, 2021 in Tripoli.
The detainees have been referred to the competent judiciary system for investigations and other legal procedures.
