BEIRUT, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people, including families of the victims and wounded from the catastrophic Beirut port explosion in 2020, gathered here on Monday in Martyrs' Square and marched toward the port to commemorate the tragedy.
The protesters, joined by activists and government officials, carried photos of the victims and banners demanding truth and accountability for the incident on Aug. 4 that claimed over 200 lives, injured some 7,000 others, and severely disrupted operations for years.
"Today, five years after this tragedy, we stand before the souls of the martyrs, before the wounded and their families, and before all Lebanese, to affirm that justice will not die, and that accountability will inevitably come," Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said.
"The Lebanese state, with all its institutions, is committed to uncovering the full truth, regardless of obstacles and no matter how high the positions involved. Justice knows no exceptions, and the law applies to everyone without discrimination," he said.
