BEIRUT, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Friday warned that Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Thursday night risk jeopardizing the fragile stability maintained since last November.
The attacks violated Security Council Resolution 1701 and undermined civilians' confidence that a non-violent solution to the conflict is possible, the UN said in a statement.
Peacekeepers at two positions in southern Lebanon were forced to move to shelters for safety, it said, adding that the strikes endangered Lebanese soldiers, UN personnel and civilians.
It urged the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to halt further strikes and fully withdraw from Lebanese territory, and called on all parties to avoid additional violations or escalatory actions.
It also urged both sides to honor their commitments under Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement reached last November, warning that continued escalation risks undoing hard-won progress toward stability.
According to Lebanese sources, one person was injured and several houses were destroyed on Thursday in Israeli airstrikes on civilian homes and Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon.
The IDF said in a statement that it targeted weapons storage facilities belonging to Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force unit.
