Israeli air defenses intercept missiles over southern Lebanon

BEIRUT, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Israeli air defense systems intercepted about 20 Iranian missiles launched toward Israel on Saturday, according to Lebanese security sources and eyewitnesses, who said the interceptions occurred in the skies over southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's official National News Agency reported that explosions were heard in the eastern part of southern Lebanon, caused by Israeli interceptor missiles.

The interceptions came amid a sharp escalation of tensions following joint U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran, raising concerns of a broader confrontation in the Middle East.
